Dimitris Daskalopoulos Collection Donates 51 Artworks to Four Museums in Greece and Scotland

The D. Daskalopoulos Collection announced a donation of 51 artworks to four museums across Greece and Scotland.

The majority of the works will be spread across the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOMUS), and the National Gallery of Greece, all in Greece, with three pieces heading to the National Galleries of Scotland.

The donation continues the collection’s “commitment to making contemporary art accessible to wider audiences,” the announcement stated. It added, “This initiative seeks to ensure the long-term preservation of the works while sustaining an ongoing dialogue with the art of the future.”

The National Gallery of Greece will receive 29 modern artworks by leading Greek artists, including Io Angeli, Konstantinos Andreou, Spyros Vikatos, George Vorres, Kostis Georgiou, Apostolos Yayannos, Giorgos Golfinos, Christos Karas, Costa Coulentianos, Yiannis Maltezos, Christos Sarakatsianos, Aristotelis Solounias, Yiannis Spyropoulos, Thanos Tsingos, Alekos Fassianos, and Yiannis Psychopedis. This donation will bolster the museum’s collection by adding works created during three highly productive decades that span the 1960s through to the 1990s. These artists, in particular, connected Greek artistic production with international postwar avant-garde movements.

Three works by the artists Nobuko Tsuchiya, Ioanna Pantazopoulou, and Nana Sachini are slated to head to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete.

MOMUS will receive 16 works by artists Jay Heikes, Subodh Gupta, Seth Price, Josh Tonsfeldt, Kelley Walker, Elias Kafouros, Haluk Akakҫe, Catharina Van Eetvelde, Stefanos Tsivopoulos, and Alex Hubbard that form a larger dialogue with existing pieces already held in the museum’s collection.

The National Galleries of Scotland will receive three works in total. Two, by Mike Kelley and Bruce Nauman, were featured in the 2013 exhibition “From Death to Death and Other Small Tales.” The third is a work by Greek artist Margarita Myrogianni.

Many of these pieces were acquired early in Dimitris Daskalopoulos’s collecting career and were part of the formation of one of the foremost international private collections of contemporary art. Daskalopoulos is an ARTnews Top 200 collector.

In 2022, more than 350 works and the majority of the collection were donated to four major museums: EMST, Tate, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Subsequently, in 2025, six more works were donated to the Guggenheim Bilbao.

The Storied Collection of Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio’s Founder Heads to Auction at Sotheby’s Paris

On April 10, Sotheby’s Paris will hold a sale dedicated to Niomar Moniz Sodré Bittencourt, a Brazilian businesswoman and journalist and the founder of Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro. Bittencourt, who died in 2003, was a prodigious collector of mid-century Modernist masterpieces, including works by Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso, and Max Ernst, as well as leading Brazilian artists of the era including Almir Da Silva Mavignier and Franz Krajcberg. For those unfamiliar with Bittencourt, that may soon change. Later this year, according to Sotheby’s, a biography by author Ricardo Cota will be released. Titled A Mulher que Enfrentou o Brasil (The Woman Who Faced Brazil), the book will tell how Bittencourt both shaped Brazil’s modern art scene and courageously defied the Brazilian military dictatorship of the ’60s and ’70s.
